Early Vote Action’s Letter Writing Campaign

Brings Unprecedented Louisiana Registration Gains

Republicans Gained 1,695 Voters – a 182.5% Increase

Lafayette, LA ‒ Scott Presler, founder and executive director of Early Vote Action (EVA), is celebrating unprecedented voter registration gains for the Republican Party of Louisiana. On September 1st, the Louisiana Secretary of State released data for the previous month of August. While Democrats lost 1,787 voters, Republicans gained 1,695 – a staggering net loss of 3,482 voters for the Democrat Party in one month. Based on historical data regarding monthly registrations, Republicans had previously at best saw net gains of near 600 new voters, but more typically saw net losses of voters. This month’s success is a game changer in crafting party strategy.

In late July, Early Vote Action began a letter writing campaign to new movers in Louisiana. A new mover is someone that recently moved to the state, but who is not yet registered to vote. Announcing the campaign on social media, EVA received hundreds of volunteers. Each volunteer received 5 names and addresses, as well as a letter writing template.

“Over the last month, more than 350 volunteers have written and mailed 3,000 letters. The secret to this success was giving people small, achievable goals. If you do the math, it’s clear that some volunteers wrote more than 5 letters. In fact, my email has been flooded every day with people asking for more,” Presler said.

With the Louisiana voter registration deadline looming on September 13th, Presler is asking anyone with outstanding letters to get them in the mail as soon as possible.

Current Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry is the leading Republican gubernatorial candidate and is backed by the LAGOP. With the primary on Saturday, October 14th, Landry needs a majority of the vote in order to win the election and avoid a costly runoff.

“I would be remiss not to acknowledge the importance of early voting, especially in this election,” said Presler. “Not only is the election on a Saturday, but LSU is playing Auburn at Tiger Stadium on the same day. It’s a very real possibility that large numbers of people will attend the game and forget to vote. If you won’t be in town, request an absentee ballot or vote early.”

Presler continued, “If we win outright on October 14th, we can immediately direct all of our volunteers to help win in Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Campaign resource allocation matters and we want to be strategic in ensuring every Republican candidate around the country gets every tool available to their campaign – it starts with winning Louisiana in October.”
